Phase 1: A/C Project
Overview
Successfully install and operate an aftermarket air conditioning unit into the X1/9. Unit purchased from Southern Rods for $800 and includes the following components:
- Evaporator
- Condenser
- Compressor
- Drier
- Hoses
- Vents
- Air ducts
- Controls
- Replaced water pump
- Replaced thermostat
- Removed, cored, coated and replaced radiator
- Replaced coolant hoses
- Replaced radiator cooling fan relay
- Replaced 194 degree thermo switch with a 174 degree switch to operate the radiator cooling at a lower temperature
- Replaced coolant reservoir with a stainless steel refurbished unit
Preparation
All existing components that ensure efficient heating and cooling operation where replaced with new units. This meant a complete overhaul of the cooling system which included the following work:
To restore a higher voltage to the electrical system, the 65A alternator was rebuilt and installed. The system was then flushed and filled with a fresh 50/50 mixture of distilled water and anti-freeze and air was then purged from the system at the radiator bleed screw. The system was then successfully tested for efficient coolant flow and operation with the engine temperature holding steady at 190 degrees in 100-degree ambient temps.
The car is now ready for the aftermarket A/C retro-fit.
