Met the fellas of LVIAC at the usual watering hole on the south Las Vegas Strip. After lunch we caravaned over to The Cannery in North Las Vegas to attend the opening of the Gasoline Alley Car Show. There was a live band, food, more beer and muscle cars galore. That and the obligitory matching chrome to boot….

Jeff Wenger brought out his Ferrari Daytona. This is a 1971 Replica built on a Corvette platform.

Chris just pulled his 1981 Spider out of storage and discovered a fuel leak. Jeff donated his fire extinguisher for safe measure :)

That’s Brian’s Gallardo…

Brian’s dream come true…easy on the pedal fella!

That’s a lot of chrome….

Phase 1: A/C Project

Overview

Successfully install and operate an aftermarket air conditioning unit into the X1/9. Unit purchased from Southern Rods for $800 and includes the following components:

  • Evaporator
  • Condenser
  • Compressor
  • Drier
  • Hoses
  • Vents
  • Air ducts
  • Controls
  • Replaced water pump
  • Replaced thermostat
  • Removed, cored, coated and replaced radiator
  • Replaced coolant hoses
  • Replaced radiator cooling fan relay
  • Replaced 194 degree thermo switch with a 174 degree switch to operate the radiator cooling at a lower temperature
  • Replaced coolant reservoir with a stainless steel refurbished unit
    Preparation

All existing components that ensure efficient heating and cooling operation where replaced with new units. This meant a complete overhaul of the cooling system which included the following work:

To restore a higher voltage to the electrical system, the 65A alternator was rebuilt and installed. The system was then flushed and filled with a fresh 50/50 mixture of distilled water and anti-freeze and air was then purged from the system at the radiator bleed screw. The system was then successfully tested for efficient coolant flow and operation with the engine temperature holding steady at 190 degrees in 100-degree ambient temps.

The car is now ready for the aftermarket A/C retro-fit.Heat and A/C Unit

I was working at McKenzie Willamette Medical Center in Springfield Oregon this week and had some time on Thursday to meet up with local X1/9 enthusiasts Mark Plaia and Eric Armstrong. This was a great meeting as we’ve been “virtual” friends for a few years now via XANA and have now finally met in person. We met for beer and pizza at a local pizza joint. Couple of XANA’s finest in my book. Great guys – thank you both!

Here’s Eric with his 128 coupe. It’s his daily driver (complete with car seat in the back):
