Success!

Second attempt at driving from OC to Emeryville (CA) was a success…Got to JJ’s place around lunchtime and we finished putting on new brakes on all 4 corners using the overhaul kit from Midwest (excellent package btw!) The package includes rebuilt calipers (loaded), new rotors and pads. I also have the brake hoses but feared getting that flare nut on the brake line loose might set me back time-wise again (even with the right tool in hand). Will leave that to a local mechanic (ya, I know…) So, the overhaul completely sorted out the issue which “stopped” me in my tracks on the 1st attempt; good to go now.

Except that as my wife and I started the trek back to the Bay, as we began to exit off the 405 in Seal Beach to grab some coffee, we heard a funny noise in the engine bay. As I pull into Starbucks, the red light comes on for the voltage meter – battery is not charging. Look in the back and sure enough, the alternator belt had snapped. Not a problem – JJ to the rescue! We hook up a battery charger and drive about 5 miles south to the nearest auto parts store where they have the belts in-stock…grab part #7300 head out to the parking lot to change….but wait, there is a mechanic shop across the street…I am feeling lazy and not wanting to get real dirty (ya, I know…) so I run across and talk to them…they would like $50 to do the job. Sounds like money well spent, so I drive the car in and after an inspection, they would like to replace both belts (car has A/C) – price is now $60; sounds reasonable to me….hand the car off and sit back in a chair.

Uh oh, the alternator belt is too short…so I run back across the street and pull part #7325…..run back across, nope, too long, run back, pull part #7312…run back, nope still too short….run back, pull part #’s 7300 (again), 7310, 7315, 7320 and run back (anyone remember Frogger?)…7315 is the best fit..mind you, the computer says 7300 is the proper belt (ya, I know)…So after 2 hours of this, it’s all buttoned up and ready to go….enough of that!

Rest of the drive was smooth as butter…took 405 to 101, then up 880. I swear the car ran better and better as we cruised. I’ve missed being this “connected” to the road, hearing every sound, monitoring battery and temperature gauges and of course, that backwards tach was a much welcomed familiar friend I haven’t seen in over 2 years. The car stayed pegged at 190 degrees, except for rising a little uncomfortably high going up the Cuesta Grade, but returned to normal after. Handles terribly – new struts waiting to go on. No leaks.

Final Trip Metrics for the 500

I’ll soon be moving on to other things, but before I wrap up on the whole adventure with the Cinquecento, here are some final numbers from my trip:

2,359 miles from Dana Point, CA to Knoxville, TN
37 hours of driving time
43.2mpg
65mph average speed

Some things to keep in mind – the drive eastward on Interstate 40 is mostly an uphill climb from sea-level to 7,400-foot elevation. Even with the A/C on and everything mated to a 69hp 1.2L engine, the 500 performed quite nicely and turned in superb final numbers.

Overall, this was the highlight of my summer, if not my year, and more. I grew quite attached to the car and I was really sad to see her go. Hopefully, FIAT does bring it to the U.S., but it was an honor to be part of the unofficial debut.

Re-trace portions of my journey and long streches of highway as a passenger and also fiddle with the 500′s media console here:

Day 2: Abuquerque, NM to Tulsa, OK

After a nice comfortable rest, I awoke at 7am and hit the road at 8am. Stopped to fill-up the gas tank and get my cup of Starbucks. Arrived in Amarillo, today’s half-way mark, and found a place my McKesson collegues frequented on one of their projects – Rudy’s BBQ! I found it totally by accident, even though I knew of the place and had recently sent my Dad a gift basket from here on his last birthday. I didn’t know it was also a gas station too. I know what you’re thinking – eat at Rudy’s, get gas. Haha.

Today I also decided to take parts of Route 66 along the way and see what I could see. I randomly chose Santa Rosa, a town east of Amarillo, to look around. Stumbled upon an old drive-in eatery which begged us to look although it appears our little Cinquecento is too young and about 40 years too late to have a meal there.

The rest of the drive into Oklahoma City/Tulsa went smooth. The 500 is just a great ride. In for the night at Allen Mandlebaum’s place, then on to Memphis in the morning to meet with Jim Decker and hopefully some other FIAT Finatics.

Memphis will be the final stop before I say goodbye :(

Trip Report: Chehalis, WA to Las Vegas, NV

After leaving the gathering, I began the trek home. This adventure would be filled with less stops as I just wanted to get home. I did decide to pass through Southern California though, to take care of some personal business. My goal for this evening was to drive from Chehalis to Sacramento…and get there by midnight. It was 3pm when I left! Well, the weather turned from bad to worse passing through central and southern Oregon and I found myself stressing due to a red glow on the instrument panel – the alternator belt was getting wet and not making good contact…I pressed on though, spraying it down with WD40 to displace the water during fuel stops. Didn’t help much, but it didn’t leave me stranded either. Basically, I’m missing a rain guard underneath…

I finally did hit Sacramento at 130am and my head hit the pillow moments after arriving at my hotel. The next morning I left for SoCal, leaving at 9am, arriving at 330pm….just right to miss the afternoon rush hour :) After spending the night in Costa Mesa, I headed for home the next morning. No issues to report -

Road to Oregon

On the morning of Saturday, August 4th, at 8:45am, I left Las Vegas for Bend, Oregon. This trip almost did not happen as the night before I was doing a pre-trip check and discovered a leak at the thermostat housing where it attaches to the block. I removed the housing to replace the gasket with a thicker one and when I reinstalled, I ended up stripping the hole on the block. Luckily, I had a Helicoil kit on hand so I drilled and re-tapped the hole and it all bolted back together nice and tight. Problem solved.

Since I would be working in Bend that week, I had packed the usual business attire and brought along my laptop computer. Both fit snuggly in the front compartment. My entertainment options for the long haul included XM and iPod. My route would take me north on Highway 95 into Reno, Nevada, then cut over to Interstate 80 Westbound via Highway 50. From there, I continued up Highway 395 into Northern California until I arrived into Klamath Falls, Oregon. Starting out on 95 North was wide-open road through Death Valley. It was unseasonably “cool” at 90-95 degrees – a nice relief for a car with no A/C.

Once I reached Susanville, California, I had driven for about 8 hours. I missed a planned turn 30 miles prior, which would have taken me up Highway 395 and into Oregon, so I had to re-route. After a quick dinner at McD’s and re-fueling, I decided to take Highway 139 into Klamath Falls. Prior to departure, I booked a hotel room figuring I could make it there before nightfall and get a good-night’s sleep. Klamath Falls would be another 190-miles. Surprisingly, this “detour” ended up being the highlight of the day’s drive as I had the entire Northbound lane to myself – there was not a single soul in front or in back of me. The occassional state trooper and campers passed along Southbound lanes here and there. Just a gorgeous drive!

At exactly 20.59, I arrived at the Oregon border. Just over 12 hours have passed since I embarked on the adventure. It would be another 30 miles before I got to Klamath Falls, where I had a room and a cool shower waiting for me at the Best Western Olympic Inn…
